The Department of Biology has created this internal tribute page for our community. Feel welcome to share a tribute, a note of thanks, an anecdote – simple or long – all are welcome. Stephen worked with us for 32 years. We hope to eventually share this with his family. Often our family know very little about our work life and the friendships created there.

If you would like to read more about Stephen, there is an obituary page here.

Thank you for taking a moment to contribute. And please feel welcome to share as he did.

“Steve was a very helpful, friendly and kind person. Many thanks to him for all the things he had done for our lab and giving me helpful life advice.” ~Anonymous

“For people who may not have known him much outside of work, he was very physically active when I first met him, he loved being a sports official for a large variety of sports. Often if he was headed out the door, you’d notice him wearing a different referee uniform than from the day before. He lead a getfit@mit team regularly and liked to check in with people just to say hi, even if he hadn’t talked to them recently. We’ll miss him terribly.” ~Anonymous

“Stephen was always available and willing to help. His service and dedication will be truly missed.” ~Anonymous

“Having Stephen be my colleague is one of the best things that happened to me after I came to work at MIT. We are both system administrators that work for the BioMicro center. He and I worked closely together for shared tasks for almost 10 years. He has very good knowledge of network and internet, and is very capable of building machines and servers. I rely on him heavily when the work involves hardware, and he is always willing to help. Before the pandemic, we saw each other on almost every work day. I feel relaxed when talking to Stephen. After the pandemic started, he volunteered coming to campus frequently to help with hardware related work. I feel very comfortable with his strong support behind. He kept on working until his final days. Even last Thursday we still had a lot of email exchanges on how to help our customers. I am very lucky to have Stephen as a colleague and friend. I am going to miss him a lot.” ~Jingzhi

“Stephen was probably one of the first people I met in 68 who took the time to help me (and probably countless others) get started on the computers/networks/printers here – not only did he help people when they first arrived, he’d brainstorm, problem solve with us to come up with solutions for setting up work stations for equipment drivers that required backwards compatibility or discontinued parts, and he found ways to help us troubleshoot each of our random lab/equipment configurations even if it meant facetiming during the pandemic remote stages. I also remember instances of him helping those who had retired set up their computers and internet at home so they wouldn’t be out of touch. I’m sure there are more things to remember and will try to add more at another time.” ~SaRa Kim

“When I started my lab as a faculty member, Stephen was one of the few people who regularly stopped by to say hi to me and my lab members. I loved running into him in and around building 68 – he always had a smile and often had a joke. We miss you Stephen!” ~Anonymous

“Steve was always so helpful and friendly when I had any issues with my computer. He was so patient with all my silly questions, some of which I would ask multiple times since I forgot to write it down. He never at all showed any signs of annoyance. He knew I was a personal trainer and into fitness so we often chatted about his coaching and reffing of sports games. He just genuinely cared about helping out with things immediately (instant email replies, instant return of a phone call, or he’d magically appear in my office shortly after I sent an email) and would also take the time to chat and get to know us outside of our work. I will miss him a lot. I was so sad to hear the news of his passing. I was shocked since I had no idea he had ALS. But knowing Steve, he would be positive and not share news that might bring the mood down. He was always so upbeat.” -Fen

“I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Stephen for many years. not only at MIT in the department of Biology, but also on the Baseball field. During those wonderful years on the baseball field, I was a couch, and my son a pitcher, in many games Stephen umpired. Stephen always had a smile when resolving any issue, he had been confronted with. I will truly miss him, and will be thankful, of my memories, of him always.” ~John Fucillo

“I thought Stephen was a terrific person. I remember the first time I met him and we immediately bonded over our common NY experience. For me, it was immediately recognizable and set the tone of our friendship. But what remains strongest in my heart is what he did for our friend. When our friend told me that on weekends and evenings, he would go to her home to set up and troubleshoot her computer, I was deeply touched. She was battling cancer with multiple surgeries and treatments over several years. She was trying to work from home to continue her employment and sense of “normal”. When I thanked him, you could sense how humble he was – he quickly took the topic off of him and the kindness he was doing. He just wanted to talk about her and how courageous she was and what a tough battle she was fighting. I’ll bet very few people knew about this. Whenever I would see him, he always asked how she was doing, did I know if she needed help, etc. He didn’t want to intrude or give her the great inquisition but rather he aimed to simply help a colleague and friend who needed assistance, quietly. And although I never knew about Stephen’s battle with ALS, I am guessing that this story mirrors how he faced his ALS – with courage and dignity. I am still so taken aback that he emailed me on 9/16. There was not the slightest indication of what was going on with him. I am grateful for all I learned from Stephen. I am so honored and humbled that he was my friend.” ~Mary Gallagher
